Kestrel never knew what real freedom was...Or even what "freedom" really meant. Upon the explaination of others, the caracal couldn't understand why any cat would want this "freedom". Why go through the trouble of hunting your own food? Why force yourself to sleep out in the elements, even during the cold of winter? It didn't sound very appealing at all. He would much rather stay with his human sailing the seas, being the human's companian and helping to fish every once in a while. But fate didn't agree with this destiny, and all to soon the caracal was striving to survive the city streets of Massilia. He couldn't live here forever, he and Red knew that. Once they had escaped into the wild, they were lost. After being taken in by Air Empire, Kestrel felt obligated to stay with them. What other choice did he have? All he had ever known was gone...likely forever. All he had was Red, and even the bird wouldn't stay with the caracal forever.
Time passed, and Kestrel began to understand why "freedom" had been so saught after by the felines he helped deliver to the colliseums. The thrill of the hunt and taste of the prey was well worth the trouble. The natural world was more comfortable than any cushion he'd ever slept on aboard a ship. He'd never stop missing the open ocean, no. But at least here, he had choices. He could sail where he pleased among the grasses that rippled like waves in the wind. He could take liberating leaps at the big blue sky like it was the water he once swam in. This is what it was. To be free.
