A soft wind blew through the trees, tinted orange by the setting sun. Jarica sat silently on the front steps of her home, absently studying the ground by her feet and holding her Eevee close to her. She couldn’t bear to be inside, not now. Jarica didn’t hear the foot steps behind her but looked up when she felt her sister resting a hand on her shoulder.
“He’s gone,” She murmured. Jarica could tell by her voice that she was struggling to be strong, but tears still welled up in her eyes and she quickly wiped them away. Mr. Moore was their grandfather, who had requested to speak to each of them alone that evening, to tell each of them something in private, but Jarica hadn’t the strength to be with him in his last moments to watch him slip away. She clutched her pet, Eevee, closer, and sobbed. Their grandfather had been very ill in the past few months, and finally the sickness had taken him. As their only caretaker, the two had been very close to their grandfather. He was all they had left to cling to. Now they were alone, and Jarica’s older sister, Flannery, sat beside her and both mourned their loss.
A woman in blue not far off walked slowly towards them. Flannery stood, wiping the tears from her face.
“Is he...” The woman started quietly.
“Yes, Officer Jenny,” Flannery whispered, and moved to make room for her to pass. Officer Jenny laid a hand comfortingly on Flannery’s shoulder, and proceeded into the house.
A few moments later, Jenny’s voice could be heard from inside as she finished radio transmissions to the emergency personnel waiting outside.
“Roger that.” Officer Jenny reappeared and crouched beside Jarica. “You’ll have to move now so the emergency personnel can get in,” she spoke softly, but Jarica turned away. She looked unsurely at Flannery and walked away, towards the ambulance.
She felt her sister lean over her to usher her to get up. Jarica didn’t want to move. She wanted to just sit there in her own place to be swallowed by her own thoughts and grief. But she stood shakily anyway and let Flannery lead her some distance away from the entrance. Shortly after, a stretcher was brought in, and Jarica had to turn away when they brought it back out, a white sheet hiding a still shape beneath it. The paramedics took some notes on paper after they had the stretcher loaded, then closed the doors after speaking to Officer Jenny. She nodded and said something Jarica couldn’t hear, then walked back to the two girls huddled in the growing dusk.
“I’m so sorry for your loss. Mr. Moore was a great man.” Her eyes spoke of sadness, and with nothing more to say, she walked a few paces to her motorcycle and took her helmet. “Call me if you need me.” Then she hopped on and slowly led the ambulance away. Tears slid down Jarica’s face and dropped on the soft heap of fur in her arms.
Eevee looked up at Jarica with sympathy and mewed, “Eeee...?”
It was getting dark now. “Come on, it’s getting cold out here. Let’s go inside and talk.” Flannery suggested, and put her arm around her little sister to guide her.
